The April 20 closure of PharMEDium's facility on Stults Road off Route 130 will result in the loss of 287 jobs, according to a notice by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
AmerisourceBergen, PharMEDium's parent company, said in a statement it is closing the facility "in light of the increased regulatory and commercial challenges, coupled with the difficulty of making progress on remediation and continued financial burden."
The U.S, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that PharMEDium produced such drugs as oxytocin and morphine sulfate, but that they were ineffective due to unhealthy conditions at the plant.
AmerisourceBergen said it is exploring the possibility of reassigning some workers.
“The contribution of our PharMedium associates is greatly appreciated, and this decision was not made lightly. We are encouraging impacted associates to apply for positions of interest within our organization, and all eligible associates will be offered severance benefits, as well as career support services,” the company said in a statement.
